Daniel Serves King Darius
1 It seemed good to Darius to appoint 120 satraps over the kingdom, that they would be in charge of the whole kingdom, 2 and over them three commissioners (of whom Daniel was one), that these satraps might be accountable to them, and that the king might not suffer loss. 3 Then this Daniel began distinguishing himself among the commissioners and satraps because he possessed an extraordinary spirit, and the king planned to appoint him over the entire kingdom.
An evil plot against Daniel v4-13
Evil Plot against Daniel
All the commissioners of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the high officials and the governors conspired together to have to persuade the king to establish a statute of the law that anyone who makes a petition to any god or man besides the king, for thirty days, shall be cast into the lions’ den. They said to the king in v8
"Now, O king, establish the injunction and sign the document so that it may not be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which may not be revoked.” Therefore King Darius signed the document, that is, the injunction.
. . . v13 Then they answered and spoke before the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, O king, or to the injunction which you signed, but keeps making his petition three times a day.”
The story of the evil plot against Daniel highlights the differences in the types of governments from the Babylonians to the Persians. It is reflected in the type of metal pictured in the image of the colossus. King Nebuchadnezzar was a head of gold (c2) and having absolute power even over the law. The Persian king Darius being shown as the shoulders and chest and made out of silver and not as strong. The difference in the metal is shown in the power and authority of each successive kingdom and king. Nebuchadnezzar had absolute authority even over the law for they looked at him as a god to be worshiped. After Babylon, each successive king's authority weakened and that is what we see here, Darius was subject to the law and not above it. Darius could not go against a law he created less than 48 hours earlier, not even to save the life of Daniel. The king had no choice but to put Daniel in the lion’s den. If Daniel was going to be saved it would be by the hand of God.
