Daniel tells the meaning of the handwritting.

God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end,

Mene, Mene, =

Tekel,           =

you have been weighed ... and found wanting;"

UPharsin     =

your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

v30 "That same night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain. v31 So Darius the Mede received the kingdom at about the age of sixty-two.

Daniel ends the chapter saying only that the king was slain that same night.

Arrogance and human pride were the core reasons for his death and with it, the prophecy by Daniel in his interpretation of the dream (c2) of Nebuchadnezzar (grandfather of Belshazzar) came true. The Kingdom of the "Head of Gold" has now passed to the kingdom of silver and the Medes and Persians. Daniel now served a new king, ... King Darius.
